Sortem for solicitors

File organisation for solicitors and law firms

Matter files grow quickly: drafts, signed versions, correspondence, evidence and court documents. Sortem helps you apply a consistent folder structure to each matter, with a full preview before anything moves and History and Undo afterwards.

Available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. macOS coming soon. Paid features require a subscription.

Why matter folders drift

Documents arrive by email, from clients and from the other side, and are saved wherever is quickest at the time. Over the life of a matter, folders fill with near-duplicate drafts and attachments with generic names.

A consistent structure makes files easier to review and hand over. Sortem lets you describe that structure once and apply it, while you stay in control of every change.

Typical files

  • Drafts and signed agreements
  • Client and third-party correspondence
  • Evidence and exhibits
  • Court and tribunal documents
  • Attendance notes
  • Invoices and fee estimates

How Sortem fits your workflow

Choose a folder, tell Sortem what you want, review the proposed changes and approve them. Supported actions can be reversed with Undo.

Bring order to an existing matter

Point Sortem at a matter folder and review the proposed structure before approving it.

Consistent naming

Apply a date-first naming pattern across a batch of drafts so the latest version is obvious.

You choose what Sortem can see

Sortem only works with folders you choose, and file contents aren't sent to AI unless you turn on content-aware renaming.

Example instructions

  • “Organise these files by matter, with Correspondence, Drafts, Signed and Evidence subfolders.”
  • “Put files with “signed” or “executed” in the name into the Signed folder.”
